Atopic dermatitis is an skin diseases combines defects in the epidermal barrier and a bacterial dysbiosis characterized by increased colonization by S.Aureus accompanied by a decrease an expression of endogenous antibacterial (e.g β-defensin) [1, 2]. Currently, there are no commercial formulations containing endogenous antibacterial agents, but there is evidence that their topical administration improves innate skin immunity and reduces colonization by S.Aureus. Specifically, this research studied a bifunctional nano-hydrogel for topical administration that contained cyclosporine-A (to improve the epidermal barrier by decreasing cutaneous immune activation) and β-defensin.
