Vitamin D (VD) deficiency is a public health problem. Worldwide, it has been reported that more than one billion people may have a deficiency of this hormone. VD is essential for multiple biological processes; its deficiency is linked to rickets, osteomalacia, among others1.
The most common strategy to address this problem has been the incorporation of VD into multivitamins, or its direct administration in tablets, capsules, or solutions. It is always administered orally. However, these methods of administration have not been as successful as expected due to non-compliance with therapy and because they are not effective for patients with absorption problems or digestive issues.
