Bioinspired Ultratiny Patterned Janus Patch for Selective Tissue Adhesion and Anti-Adhesion in Skin

Introduction:

Post-operative tissue adhesions remain a major clinical complication following abdominal, pelvic, and thoracic surgeries, affecting up to 93% of patients worldwide and leading to chronic pain, infertility, bowel obstruction, and surgical complications. Conventional adhesion barriers such as films, hydrogels, and sprays mainly prevent tissue contact but lack sufficient mechanical stability and regenerative capability. To address these limitations, we developed an ultratiny patterned Janus patch that integrates adhesive and anti-adhesive functionalities within a single biodegradable biomaterial platform inspired by natural bioadhesion and antifouling mechanisms.

  • Understand the design principles of ultratiny patterned Janus biomaterials for surgical interfaces.
  • Explain how bioinspired microstructures enable simultaneous tissue adhesion and anti-adhesion performance.
  • Evaluate the potential of multifunctional Janus biomaterials for tissue regeneration and surgical applications.
