Immunomodulatory Hydroxide Layered Nanoparticles for Local Periodontal Therapy

Introduction:

Periodontal and peri-implant diseases (PDPIs) are chronic inflammatory conditions driven by dysbiotic biofilms and an exacerbated host immune response, leading to tissue destruction and implant failure (1). Conventional therapies often fail to adequately control inflammation, highlighting the need for local immunomodulatory strategies. In this context, this study aims to develop zinc–magnesium layered hydroxide nanoparticles loaded with rosehip, a phytochemical anti-inflammatory bioactive (2), as a nanotechnology-based platform for localized immunomodulation in PDPIs. 

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the rationale for using Zn–Mg nanoparticles with RH extracts as local immunomodulators in PDPIs.
  • Describe how rosehip phytochemical doping influences nanoparticle physicochemical and biological performance.
  • Demonstrate the potential of Zn–Mg nanoparticles doped with RH to modulate oral inflammation using in vitro models.
