Introduction: Mucoadhesive formulations attach to the mucosa, allowing for efficient absorption. Attempts have been made to enhance the absorption of poorly absorbed drugs by imparting intestinal mucosal adhesion to the oral formulations. However, the intestinal fluid flows above the intestinal mucosa. Therefore, the drug and the absorption enhancers in the formulation are released and diluted by intestinal fluid [1](Figure 1), reducing the effectiveness of the absorption enhancers. It is necessary to evaluate the drug release behavior of mucoadhesive formulations in the gastrointestinal tract separately for the mucosa and intestinal fluid.
Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able to understand the drawbacks of the muco-adhesive formulation on intestinal absorption.
