Novel dual phytocompound-loaded liposomes for improved wound treatment

Introduction:

Chronic wounds pose a significant problem in today’s society and have a strong impact on healthcare systems. For wound management, natural compounds derived from Thymus and Berberis genus can be of use, having demonstrated significant regenerative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities (1). The combination of more than one molecule with relevant bioactivity can lead to synergistic effects and improved wound healing, and co-encapsulation into liposomes can achieve that (2). The purpose of this work was to co-encapsulate Thymus and Berberis genus phytocompounds for topical wound treatment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe a novel liposomal formulation containing one hydrophilic and one hydrophobic phytocompound.
  • Explain the characteristics of the vesicles that exhibit a homogeneous and small particle size.
  • Define the potential of this liposomal system to facilitate the penetration and co-delivery into deeper skin layers.
