Important Travel Updates for Visa Exempt Travelers!

United States Citizens
Beware of the 6-month rule for passports. American citizens are required to have passports to enter and exit the U.S. and other countries worldwide; however, passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the planned departure date.

Travel visas are not always required. The best place to start your research is the U.S. State Department web site.

European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES)
Beginning October 12, 2025, the European Union's Entry/Exit System (EES) will go live. While nothing has changed when it comes to the rules of who can enter the EU, and how long they can stay, the new system will track cross-border movements in the Schengen area of 29 countries. (Including Portugal) The EES will capture biometric data from non-EU citizens entering the Schengen area (essentially all EU states except Cyprus and Ireland, plus Switzerland, Iceland and Norway). In the same way that visitors are fingerprinted entering the US, travelers to the EU will be fingerprinted when they enter the bloc — and again, when they leave.

Additional information can be found here

European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS)
Also starting in 2026, Visa-exempt travelers may need European Travel Information & Authorisation System (ETIAS) to travel to Portugal. This program is currently scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2026 (October–December). We will notify all registrants if an application becomes necessary to attend the Annual Meeting in July 2026. Additional information about ETIAS can be found here.
